Oddudua August 11

Oddudua August 11 Image
"THE YORUBA GODDESS ODDUDUA", KNOWN AS THE MOTHER OF ALL THE GODS, IS HONORED ON THIS DAY BY FOLLOWERS OF THE SANTERIA RELIGION IN AFRICA AND SOUTH AMERICA. ODDUDUA," WHO WAS PRIMARILY A MOTHER GODDESS, IS THE SYMBOL AND CREATOR OF THE EARTH. IN" ODDUDUA," WE FIND A CREATIVE FORCE, THE CARING HAND WHO IS TYPICALLY DEPICTED AS A BLACK WOMAN BREASTFEEDING AN INFANT.

IN ONE OF THE LEGENDS CONCERNING "ODDUDUA "HER BROTHER-HUSBAND, ASSUGNED HIS FIRST AND BEST CREATION, "ODDUDUA," TO MAKE A RACE OF PEOPLE OUT OF CLAY TO HELP CARE FOR THE EARTH. UNFORTUNATELY, THE EVIL "OLOSI" CAUSED "ODDUDUA" TO GET DRUNK DURING THE CREATION, WHICH EXPLAINS WHY HUMANS ARE IMPERFECT AND PRONE TO ILLNESS.

SHE IS REPRESENTED IN CATHOLICISM BY "ST. CLARE."

Northern Tradition For The Solitary Practitioner

Northern Tradition For The Solitary Practitioner Cover

Book: Northern Tradition For The Solitary Practitioner by Galina Krasskova

Northern Tradition for the Solitary Practitioner is a ground-breaking look at the development of devotional work within the body of polytheistic religious traditions ranging from Theodism to asatru to Norse Paganism, that comprise the greater umbrella of the Northern Tradition. While interest in devotional and experiential work within these traditions has been growing rapidly over the past few years, this is the first book to offer an inclusive look at the diverse scope and breadth of such practices as a living, modern-day religion. It features an in-depth exploration of altar work, prayer, prayer beads, ritual work, sacred images, lore, and a thorough examination of the common core cosmology that forms the foundation of belief for the vast expanse of Northern Tradition communities.

Northern Tradition for the Solitary Practitioner is clear review of Norse Mythology, combined with modern viewpoints from many perspectives. Some practical devotional ideas that are stimulating. a great book to use as a spiritual starting point in this area.

Northern Tradition for the Solitary Practitioner is not denomination-specific: rather, it seeks to provide an entry into interior practice for anyone involved in a branch of this broad family of traditions of the ancient Norse, Germanic, and Saxon peoples, using material suitable for the solitary, independent practitioner. Those outside of the Northern Tradition who wish to deepen their own devotional practice will find this book helpful in their own work, as well.

This important new title can be seen as a companion book to Galina Krasskova's Exploring the Northern Tradition or it can stand entirely on its own.

It can be very difficult to go it alone in a tradition that organizes itself in 'hearths' and 'kindreds'. This book is not fluffy-bunny, nor is it extremist towards one perspective or another. It provides the information one needs to begin structuring one's own practice. after years of having to adapt group-oriented practices to solitary observances, I found this book to be a treasured addition to my bookshelf. The language is direct, the tone is honest, and the author tries very hard to keep a balanced view of some hotly contested beliefs within the community.

Galina Krasskova is a free-range tribalist Heathen who has been a priest of Odin for more than a decade. Her primary interest is Heathen devotional work, and she has both written and lectured extensively on the subject. Krasskova is a Northern Tradition shaman currently residing in New York, where she is pursuing her masters in religious studies. She is the author of several books, including Exploring the Northern Tradition.

Raven Kaldera is a Northern-Tradition Pagan shaman, diviner, homesteader, activist, founding member of the First Kingdom Church of asphodel, and managing editor of asphodel Press. He has written and published numerous books and articles, including Urban Primitive and the Northern-Tradition Shamanism series.

Drawing Down The Moon Witches Druids Goddess Worshippers And Other Pagans In America

Drawing Down The Moon Witches Druids Goddess Worshippers And Other Pagans In America Cover

Book: Drawing Down The Moon Witches Druids Goddess Worshippers And Other Pagans In America by Margot Adler

Popular demand for this clear-sighted compendium of information about the rebirth of Pagan religions hasn't waned since its initial publication in 1979. Distinguished by the journalism of National Public Radio columnist Margot Adler, Drawing Down the Moon explains this diverse and burgeoning religion's philosophies and activities while dispelling stereotypes that have long been associated with it. Most people don't realize that pagan simply refers to pre-Christian polytheistic nature religions, such as the various Native American creeds, Japanese Shinto, Celtic Druid, and Western European Wicca. Originally, the word pagan meant "country dweller" and was a derogatory term in Rome in the third century A.D., not unlike calling someone a hick today. If you find yourself feeling queasy when you hear the words witch or pagan, a healthy dose of reeducation via Drawing Down the Moon could be the cure.

I read this book when it was first published and recommned it to anyone who wants to become more enlightened about the topic. I have a social science background, and thus a general understanding of the various world views of traditional societies who are in my opinion closer to old Mother Earth than most of us "moderns" who spend far too much time caught up in our technology. Margot Adler (granddaughter of the famous psychologist) went exploring (ethnographic field work) and this book is the result.

She does not promote any of the world views she describes, she plays the good ethnographer and records what she finds. She participates on several occasions, and thus becomes the "participant observer" recorder. I didn't know much about the revival of "paganism" and had never heard of Wicca before I read Adler's book. I learned that in spite of the professed enlightenment of our modern age, many fear the practices described. Why? Basically, the practice of Wicca seems to be a female oriented way of life--focusing on nature, life, a spiritual path. I for one am continuing to read about Wicca and explore what others are doing.

I figure some of the so-called witches etc. are not what they purport to be, just as some of the agressive so-called Christians driving with bumper stickers that advertise their "faith" are not what they purport to be. I recommend Adler's book if you are interested in comparative religion, are looking for a new way of living or just curious about a somewhat maligned and often persecuted group of mostly women.

The Vestalia June 7th June 15th

The Vestalia June 7th June 15th Image
"VESTA" WAS THE ROMAN "GODDESS" OF THE HEARTH AND HOME, AND ALTHOUGH SHE WAS FEATURED IN FEW MYTHS, SHE WAS STILL AN IMPORTANT MEMBER OF THE ROMAN PANTHEON. IN ANCIENT ROME, SHE WAS WORSHIPPED AS THE GODDESS OF FIRE. SHE WAS THE DAUGHTER OF "CYBELE" AND "SATURN", AND THE SISTER OF "JUNO, PLUTO, "AND "NEPTUNE". THE GODDESS "VESTA" WAS REPRESENTED IN A LONG FLOWING ROBE, WITH A VEIL ON HER HEAD, HOLDING IN ONE HAND A LAMP, AND IN THE OTHER A JAVELIN. THE ROMANS BELIEVED THAT "VESTA" RESIDED WITH EACH HOUSEHOLD'S FIREPLACE, ENSURING WARMTH AND COMFORT.

IN THE TEMPLE OF THIS GODDESS AT ROME, A SACRED FIRE WAS KEPT CONTINUALLY BURNING IN EARTHEN POTS SUSPENDED IN THE AIR, AND IF BY ANY MISFORTUNE IT BECAME EXTINGUISHED, ALL PUBLIC AND PRIVATE BUSINESS WAS INTERRUPTED UNTIL THEY HAD EXPIATED THE PRODIGY. THE "VESTAL VIRGINS", WHO HAD THE CARE OF THE FIRE, WERE CHOSEN OUT OF THE NOBLEST FAMILIES IN ROME : THEY CONTINUED IN THEIR CHARGE FOR 30 YEARS, AND ENJOYED VERY GREAT PRIVILEGES; BUT IF THEY VIOLATED THEIR VOW OF CHASTITY, THEY WERE BURIED ALIVE.

THE "VESTALIA", THE "FESTIVAL OF VESTA", WAS AN EIGHT-DAY FESTIVAL HELD ANNUALLY IN HER HONOR. IT WAS CELEBRATED EXCLUSIVELY BY WOMEN WHO WALKED BAREFOOTED IN PROCESSION TO THE TEMPLE OF THE GODDESS. BANQUETS WERE

MADE BEFORE THE HOUSES; AND MEATS WERE SENT TO THE VESTALS, TO BE OFFERED BY THEM TO THE GODDESS. BREAD WAS BAKED IN THE HEARTH AND BURIED IN THE HOT ASHES. GARLANDS WERE HUNG FROM THE NECKS OF THE DONKEYS WHO WERE USED TO TURN THE MILLS.

The Secret Of The Gothick God Of Darkness

The Secret Of The Gothick God Of Darkness Cover

Book: The Secret Of The Gothick God Of Darkness by Stephen Flowers

There is a Secret God, a Hidden God, who dwells in a spiralling tower fortress and who has guided and overseen our Development from time immemorial--and who has remained concealed but very close to us awaiting the "future" time of reawakening. The time of the re-awakening is near. Already we have heard the distant claps of thunder which signal the coming storm.

The legacy of the Dark Gothick God is one which can guide those chosen by him to a state of development wherein they have attained a permanent (immortal) Consciousness which is free to act or not act in the material universe as it desires. This consciousness becomes privy to all manner of secrets of life and death and life in death. The price for this attainment is contained in the cost of attaining it-- for one who has been so chosen there can be no rest, no respite from the Quest which is, and remains, the Eternal Work.

Because the way in which knowledge of this Dark Gothick God is passed from generation to generation contradicts the favored methods of the so-called "major religions" of the world--the religions of the "book"--Judaism, Christianity and Islam--this knowledge and its methods have been forbidden and made increasingly tabu for all of the centuries since the cunning ideological conversion of Europe by Christianity.

Books can be burned, religious leaders can be killed--but the blood endures. (from Stephen E. Flowers)
