The Day Of The Feronia November 15

The Day Of The Feronia November 15 Image
"FERONIA" IS AN ANCIENT GODDESS OF THE SPRINGS AND GROVES, A WARRIOR GODDESS AS WELL AS A GODDESS OF THE HARVESTS. SHE WAS WORSHIPPED BY THE SABINES AND THE LATINS. THERE ARE MANY VERSIONS OF THIS GODDESS SO ONE DOESN'T KNOW IF SHE WAS ONLY ONE GODDESS OR SEVERAL IN ANCIENT TIMES. IN FACT, IT APPEARS AS IF THE ANCIENTS WERE AT A LOSS AS TO WHERE TO PLACE HER AMONG THE DEITIES.

SHE IS A FERTILITY GODDESS WHO WAS INVOKED TO SECURE A BOUNTIFUL HARVEST. THE ANCIENTS GIFTED HER WITH THE FIRST FRUITS TO ENSURE A GOOD HARVEST FOR THE FOLLOWING YEAR.

AT YEARLY FESTIVALS, PILGRIMS CAME IN GREAT NUMBERS FROM THE SURROUNDING COUNTRY--MANY TO PERFORM VOWS AND OFFER SACRIFICE. THOSE WHO WERE POSSESSED WITH THE SPIRIT OF THE GODDESS, WALKED WITH NAKED FEET OVER HEAPS OF BURNING COAL AND ASHES, WITHOUT RECEIVING INJURY

Because She was especially kind to the slaves, a protector and friend of the poor. In fact, it was She who brought the Cap of Freedom to all those in bondage or freed from it. On November 15th, a festival was held in Her honor.
