"ATHENA" WAS THE GREEK GODDESS OF WISDOM; SHE WAS a VIRGIN GODDESS, DEDICATED TO CHASTITY AND CELIBACY. A POWERFUL WAR GODDESS, "ATHENA" WAS USUALLY DEPICTED WITH HER SHIELD OR PROTECTIVE CLOAK, KNOWN AS THE AEGIS. SHE WAS ALSO A PATRON OF CRAFTS, ESPECIALLY POTTERY, WEAVING, AND SHIPBUILDING.
DURING THE FESTIVALS, THERE WERE MUSICAL AND ATHLETIC CONTESTS, ANIMAL SACRIFICES, AND A PROCESSION WHICH INCLUDED PRIESTS LEADING A TRAIN OF ANIMALS THAT WOULD BE SACRIFICED, MAIDENS CARRYING SACRIFICIAL IMPLEMENTS, WARRIORS, OLD MEN WITH OLIVE BRANCHES, AND HORSES. THE FESTIVAL ENDED WITH THE SACRIFICE OF OXEN AND A BANQUET.
