IN WESTERN SLAVIC MYTHOLOGY, "ZYWIE" WAS THE GODDESS OF "HEALTH AND HEALING, A GODDESS OF YOUTH." HER NAME MEANS "LIVING, BEING, EXISTING". SHE WAS WORSHIPPED THROUGHOUT WHAT IS NOW POLAND. ALTHOUGH NEVER CONSIDERED A GREAT DEITY, SHE IS INSTEAD A RATHER DIVINE FIGURE WHO SYMBOLIZES THE FEMALE PRINCIPLE OF YOUTHFULNESS, BEAUTY, AND VITALITY. "ZYWIE" IS A LEGACY FROM VERY ANCIENT TIMES. SHE WAS USUALLY DEPICTED AS SEATED AND WEARING AN ORNAMENTAL HEADDRESS...WHICH WAS SUGGESTIVE OF THE SUN'S RAYS. DRESSED IN A FLOWING GOWN, HER SHOULDERS AND CHEST ARE USUALLY BARE.

"ZWYIE" IS ASSOCIATED AS THE SPIRIT OF THE DEAD AND IS ALSO THE GODDESS OF REGENERATION AND REBIRTH; HENCE, SHE IS CONSIDERED TO BE BOTH THE "BRINGER OF DEATH "AND THE "GIVER OF LIFE". IT IS SHE WHO BLESSES THE SICK WITH REGENERATION AND HEALTH. FRIDAY IS HER SACRED DAY. HER TOTEM IS THE CUCKOO. SHE HAD A TEMPLE ON "MOUNT ZYWIEC," AND IT IS HERE THAT THE SLAVS PRAYED FOR HEALTH AND LONG LIFE...

...BUT HER MAIN PLACE OF WORSHIP WAS ON THE BEAUTIFUL ISLAND IN THE MIDDLE OF LAKE BLED IN SLOVENIA. THERE IS A LEGEND THAT A TEMPLE FOR HER STOOD ON THIS ISLAND. IT DISAPPEARED DURING BATTLES BETWEEN THE PAGANS AND CHRISTIANS WHO DESTROYED HER TEMPLE AND BUILT IN ITS PLACE A CHURCH.
