In Her youth, She had a friend, "Pallas," whose name meant" maiden". The two were inseparable. "Pallas", the daughter of Triton, a sea god, was very beautiful, and She and "Athena" often practiced warfare together. As legend has it, one day the two girls had a quarrel and just as "Pallas "tried to hit "Athena, Zeus" interfered and deflected the blow. "Athena "then retaliated, striking "Pallas," who, because She was afraid of "Zeus", did not retaliate. Alas, "Athena's" blow killed Her friend. Sorrowful over Her loss and to honor Her dear friend, "Athena" took" Pallas's" name and was henceforth referred to as "Pallas Athena. "
TO ATHENS, SHE WAS ESPECIALLY DEAR. IT WAS HERE THAT SHE HAD STRUGGLED WITH "POSEIDON" TO BECOME THE PROTECTING DIVINITY OF THE CITY. IN FACT, HOW ATHENS GOT ITS NAME IS ALSO A CURIOUS STORY. IT SEEMS THAT BOTH "POSEIDON," THE GOD OF THE SEA, AND "ATHENA" WERE COMPETING TO WIN THE FAVOR OF THE GREEKS. SO EACH OF THEM GAVE A GIFT TO THE CITY PEOPLE WHO WOULD THEN DECIDE WHICH GIFT WAS THE BEST. "POSEIDON" THRUST HIS TRIDENT INTO THE GROUND AND A SPRING GUSHED FORTH. ALTHOUGH THE SPRING CREATED A PORT IN THE CITY WHICH WOULD ENABLE TRADE, THE WATER OF THE SPRING WAS SALTY AND NOT FIT TO DRINK. "ATHENA, "ON THE OTHER HAND, TOUCHED A BLADE OF GRACE WHEREUPON AN OLIVE TREE GREW UP SUDDENLY. THE GREEKS CRIED OUT BLESSINGS ON THE TREE FOR IT COULD BE USED FOR WOOD AND THE FRUIT FOR FOOD AND OIL. THUS, THE NEW TOWN WAS NAMED ATHENS IN HONOR OF THE WISE GODDESS. SHE HAD WON THE HEARTS OF HER CITIZENS, AND THEY CELEBRATED HER WITH SACRIFICE AND FESTIVAL.
"ON THIS DAY, DECEMBER 1ST, WE CELEBRATE THE DAY OF PALLAS ATHENE. TAKE SOME TIME TODAY TO THANK OUR OWN COURAGEOUS 'ATHENAS' WHO FOUGHT A HARD WON WAR WITH SOCIETY FOR THE PRIVILEGES WE WOMEN HAVE TODAY. AND BE SURE TO PUT SOME OLIVE OIL INTO YOUR FOOD."
